On Entertainment: Hulu Stay Winning

mv5boda4mde5mtk4nl5bml5banbnxkftztgwmza2mtk5nze-_v1_sx640_sy720_Is anyone watching 11-22-63 on Hulu? It’s based off a Stephen King book from a few years ago. If you followed this blog at all you know I have great love for the KING I  can’t think of a book that I haven’t loved but for some reasons those books have not translated into great films. 11-22-63 is produced by J.J. Abrahams, who I think is brilliant, and he did a wonderful job.

The story revolves around a teacher who goes back in time to stop the assassination of JFK. A new episode is released on Hulu every Monday.

Although I love Netflix for releasing every episode of House of Cards in one go there is something very exciting about the old school way of releasing an episode a week at a time. Sometimes it’s just better to chew slowly and enjoy the moment instead of swallowing it all up at once. I also like much rather have short mini-series as compared to long drawn out seasons of twenty plus episodes when you feel the writers are just stretching it out and I end up losing interest. Okay, I digress, back to 11-22-63.

James Franco is superb in his acting as the heroic high school teacher who questions changing history at first then gets really caught up in it. There is racial tension and one scene that just made me so mad and made me think if I could go back in time WHAT WOULD I CHANGE and WHERE WOULD I GO?   I’m going to answer that in another post.

The series is eight episodes long and this week it is up to episode five so if you are looking for something to binge watch because you waited too long to get those Batman vs Superman tickets then Hulu!

If you could go back in time what are three things you would change?

On Kick Starting Your Day: ACV Detox

My mom drinks  Apple Cider Vinegar/Lemon/Cayenne Pepper combination everyday. Granted we both have great genes, that melanin thing, but she swears this is the drink that keeps her skin glowing, gives her the energy boost she needs, and keeps her blood sugar low. Win/Win/Win.

Although there are no direct medical research this drink works for clearer skin, weight loss or as an energy booster a lot of people swear by it. I drink this juice when I start to feel mentally sluggish due to bad eating habits and the need to do a detox. It is my goal starting the first of the year to drink this everyday for three months to see if I see the results I see in my mother. She really has flawless skin and I do notice my face a little clearer. By taking it for a continuous period I am hoping to see more of a change in my skin and mental clarity. I’m really looking for something to combat this dragging lethargic feeling. I don’t want to try any pre-packaged over the counter concoctions I see in the store. I’m trying to stay natural.

Apple Cider Vinegar– is a ph balancer and helps restore alkalinity in the body which can boost metabolism, strengthen immunity, and slow the aging-process to give you clearer, wrinkle-free skin.

Lemon Juice– Helps to flush toxins, helps to prevent acne and premature skin aging issues, plus aids in weight loss. Lemons contain pectin, a soluble fiber that has been shown to help with weight loss.

Cayenne Pepper– A metabolic booster that aids the body in burning fat and boost immune system. Also helps with headaches. I suffer with migraines and I’m definitely going to watch to see if this helps alleviate some of those symptoms when hormonal balance is completely off key.

Honey -A natural energy booster as well as helps with memory. It is not sugar and much healthier to add to your foods. My mom uses it in her coffee. I love honey but have not elevated to adding it in my coffee

1. Eight ounce glass of warm water.
2. 2 tablespoons of ACV
3.Half a lemon (some people do 1-2 tablespoons)
4. One pinch of cayenne pepper. In an effort to get an immediate kick once I added three pinches. I DEEPLY REGRETTED THAT. Cayenne pepper is strong and hot, very hot. Trust me just a pinch is all you need.

tumblr_lu8zhb0oeb1r0t52g5. Half a tablespoon of honey for taste. I love raw honey, its in a solid form and it is delicious. I don’t have any in the house right now so I am drinking this without honey this week.

My mom drinks this detox drink once a day but I’m going to drink it twice. Once in the morning and the other around midday when I start slowing down.

If you are looking for a natural pick me up with great skin care benefits you should try it.

On De-Stressing: Detox Bath

Christmas 2015 doesn’t really feel all that Christmasy. Maybe its the higher than normal temperatures, Christmas Eve in Rhode Island is supposed to reach sixty-five degrees. Despite the warm weather making us feel like its September and not December Christmas is still the most stressful time of the year.  Going to the store for even the smallest of things becomes an epic ordeal, we have holiday meals to prep for, plus attending all the holiday office parties- which leave little time to unwind and can be stressful in itself. A relaxing detox bath is just the ticket you need to rejuvenate your body, mind, and soul. I put up some lights in my bedroom for calming glow at night and after a detox bath my bedroom becomes a mini-retreat. I need this after a hectic weekend.

Why a Detox Bath?
It is something simple I can do at home that relaxes me and contributes to my overall health. An easy healing therapy that facilitates our body’s natural detoxification system. It is recommended to do one at least twice a week. I wish I could but I try to do one once a month.

My Basics
Baking soda-neutralizes chemicals like chlorine in this Rhode Island water.
Epsom salt-draws out toxins, is a stress reliever, improves sleep and concentration.epsom-salt-e1377029973453
pink-himalayan-bath-salt-crystalsHimalayan Pink Salt. I am currently a bit obsessed with the Pink Salt, I just discovered it about a year ago and use it in my food, my coffee facial scrubs, and now my bath.- The replenishing nutrients in Himalayan Pink Salt helps to stimulate circulation and soothe sore muscles. Naturally rich in nourishing and skin-replenishing minerals, bathing with pink bath salt is a healing and therapeutic experience for mind and body.

Essential Oils
Peppermint– Peppermint is a natural energy booster. I keep some on my desk and take a whiff of it when I feel my concentration levels dipping. I add a few drops in my bath to give me that pleasant lift
Lemon– Lemon oil is calming in nature and therefore helps in removing mental fatigue, exhaustion, dizziness, anxiety, nervousness and nervous tension. It has the ability to refresh the mind by creating a positive mindset and removing negative emotions. It is also believed that inhaling lemon oil helps in increasing concentration and alertness.

Other oils I  may switch up and use are lavender, rosemary, and tea tree oil.

1. Run hot water into the tub. You want it to be good and hot to make your body sweat. In the winter I may crank up the heat a bit and close the bathroom door to get a sauna effect.
2. Add about a cup of baking soda. Remember it helps to clarify harsh water from the tap
3. Pour in one cup of Epsom salt and one cup of himalayan or sea salt. You can just pour 2 cups of Epsom salt but I’ve been mixing it up lately and so far I love this combination
4. Drop about five to six drops of your essential oil (I’m using peppermint at this time) into the water
5. Slide in and immerse as much of yourself into the water as possible and sit for 20minutes. This is a soak NOT a bath so use no soaps you are letting your body release toxins not taking more in.
6. After 20mins or so ease out of the tub. You will feel lightheaded and somewhat drained so be careful.
7.Your pores are wide open so use a natural moisturizer like avocado oil or coconut oil no perfume lotions.
8. You’ll want to make sure you clean the tub throughly because of the toxin waste left behind.
9. Retreat to a personal space and continue to let your body relax.

During this hectic time of the year your body, mind, and soul will thank you for the moments of calm.

On RHOA: Run Kim, Run!

I’m not going to post how ridiculous reality shows are. I already posted that I am not a fan of the genre but last week I thought I would give RHOA a watch because…Tootie.

facts9984I grew up with Kim Fields and even copied that mushroom hairdo back in the day. So, I was curious when I heard she would be on the Real Housewives of Atlanta. Now that NeNe Leakes is gone I figured a lot of the toxic behaviour would go with her…OMG how could I be so wrong.

Again, I’m not going to get into a lecture about how badly these shows represent women, especially Black women, because if you are there for them I know I can’t talk you out of it no matter how ratchet it is.  Let me say this to Kim Fields though ‘Run Forrest, run!!!’ If what I saw of you the last two episodes is any indication of who you are then you are clearly out of your depth. The ratchetness is too deep on this show and you can’t save elevate your career with these ‘women’. I don’t know what your finances are but if it is really tight then I understand but if you are doing this for face time then its now worth it. I rather see you hosting a game show.

It does not matter how much money these women claim to have. How fly their clothes may be. How sophisticated their boat parties appear they are trash. If they are into these antics because it is scripted or if this is really how they roll does not matter…they are trash. It was one thing when they were just throwing champagne at one another, I don’t know where they do that, but each year they elevate to a level of drunken violence and last week was no difference. I refused to watch last nights episode even though the real fight was taken place. I’m not here for that. Two grown women arguing and then fighting for no other reason than a misunderstanding caused by too much alcohol, is bottom barrel. By the way I think Cynthia needs to take 60% of the blame for this nonsense. Porsha 40% for just not walking away when she saw her explanation of events were not going anywhere.

I wish these shows would just disappear but they seem to be growing on every channel and there is no shame whatsoever from the participants. I caught an episode last week of Love and Hip Hop with Ray J and omgoodness…I knew Ray J was a hot mess but dude do you really want to represent yourself and your family like you do on this show?

Seeing Black people behave this way on television is really sad because although people say tv is not the final influencer it is an influencer. Watching these women carry on the way they do is just like supporting those disgusting fight videos on mediatakeout. Kim please don’t let those broads change who you are and if you really are like these women please leave the show now so we never get to see that side of you. Nothing good will come out of this. Run Kim, Run!!

On Sunday Movies: The Lunchbox

If you are looking for a quiet romantic movie this afternoon let me suggest the Indian movie The Lunchbox. I love a subtle and classic romance and the The Lunchbox delivers. mv5bmtuwmzc1njizmv5bml5banbnxkftztgwoduymtixmte-_v1_sy317_cr00214317_al_

The movie takes place in Mumbai, India. They have this insane lunchbox system where the wives prepare lunch for their husbands and a courier collects it and drops it off at the husbands place of work everyday. It sounds simple but the magnitude of lunch boxes and the hustle through the Indian streets looks chaotic but supposedly it is one of the best run courier systems in the world and never make mistakes. However, this one time a lunchbox is delivered to the wrong person.

Ila, a young housewife, carefully and lovingly prepares lunch for her husband who is distant and cold, barely notices. Saajan, a retiring cranky widower benefits from the courier mistakes. They start up a dialogue through small notes. As simple as the notes are they are very revealing and comforting to the other. It is that simplicity which makes the movie so heartwarming and charming. I feel the excited expectation Saajan and Ila feel when they sit down and read the others entry on their life. I am rooting for them as anyone would when love comes not from physical attraction but through a connection of the soul. They tell each other things they are barely able to confess to themselves. I totally get this, it is comforting to have someone in the world understand you when you are fearful of being misunderstood and judged from the people around your day to day life. It is that aspect which I love in the movie. In this day we have lost the art of letter writing but there are many emails and texts that serve the same purpose of a note in a lunchbox. I wholeheartedly enjoyed it, right up to the screen went black.

It is a worthy Sunday afternoon movie for the old romantics out there!

On Televison: Mara Brock Akil & MJ

Black television has changed drastically the last five years and African American women writers are leading the way. Black women on TV are no longer the loud obnoxious here’s-my-shoulder-to-cry-on side-kick to the leading white actress. We are holding down our own stories and killing the fashion game cuz yes, we do rock and Mara Brock Akil is using her pen to to make our Tuesday nights Mary Jane fabulous.

I have to admit I can sometimes be a huge BET snob but Being Mary Jane has me tuning in every week. I stay up late for Being Mary Jane because when I watch the show I see so much of my girlfriends and myself in the characters, whether they want to admit it or not.

This is BMJ’s third season and after every show I am singing Mara’s praises. The dialogue is so us, the drama is so us, and the realness is so us. Like last season when she tackled the Ugly Black Woman (Netflix has season two catch it if you haven’t already)72bd8628494475-55c2b276e1ab9

Mara is tackling the unspoken issue of sex abuse, depression, interracial relationships (or hookups)and suicide and we are only five episodes into the season.

The absolute best thing I love about BMJ is Mara unveils real black women and our relationships with one each other. Girlfriend relationships can be up and down, toxic and healthy, crazy and uplifting but what most of them are not are like the insane relationships we see on reality television shows (I’m eyeing every black woman who stooped low to throw a wine glass at a so-called girlfriend). Last week when MJ’s friend producer came to her crying after midnight because life and family had gotten out of control for her and asked MJ to make her some homemade brownies and MJ did…my sista, my sista!! I know a lot of you know you have one friend like that. I would talk isht but I’m making the damn brownies. Mara shows us how much we as women depend on each other as anchors, as pillars, as conscience. We have our men, we have our children but there is nothing like having that ride or die chick.

We have quite a few shows we can choose from on television these days and I say watch all of them but please don’t forget Being Mary Jane on BET
