On Fashion: We’ve Come A Long Way Baby

It’s not Thursday but this Throwback couldn’t wait. This morning a friend of mine posted on her Facebook page a link from  MeTv of fashion ads for men from the 70’s

OMG!!!!! I’m still laughing. I guess I remember some of these looks but I swear my uncles were a lot more stylish than these pics would lead anyone born in the eighties and nineties to believe. One of my uncles was the splitting image of Richard Roundtree including the black leather jacket…the original Shaft for you millennial babies…

But my uncles were not all of the men of the 70’s obviously and what was happening outside of my inner circle is nothing but straight hilarity.

I do remember those ponchos. I had one when I was ten. I killed it. But I look at this picture and all I can do is scream ‘FOR WHY?” and Please don’t ever bring these back!

Hey Mike Brady!!!!

On Police: Austin Harrouf the Cannibal Killer

Austin Harrouf went mad two days ago and stabbed a married couple to death in their garage. He proceeded to stab a neighbor who tried to intervene. When the police arrived he was over the male victim trying to eat his face.

The police demanded he get off the victim, then they tasered him, he didn’t go down so they tasered him again, then they called out the dogs, and then other police officers arrived on the scene and finally tackled him. Not ONE shot fired.

.200

Five attempts to get this man in custody while he resisted. Bloodied murder scene one person stabbed and two others dead yet NOT one shot fired. I know if I walked on someone eating someones face I’m going to fear for my life because at that point the individual is clearly out of their mind and does not give a fuck…but these officers showed remarkable restraint. I didn’t know they had it in them…oh, yeah I did because when the assailant is white somehow cops never seem to have that same fear when its a black guy with a knife a gun, or empty hands. That black guy is going to get several shots in the back or chest. But a dude eating the face of a victim he gets a strategy session on how to take him down.

Was there a quick huddle around the police cars to assess the situation? How much time did they waste? Seems like an awful lot considering two victims were on the ground and I’m sure the cops didn’t know if their last breath had been taken already. Seems they went through a checklist of procedures first and as their chief commended them for not shooting and risking harming the victims…although one was getting his face gnawed. Yup, funny how cops can be really brave and have no fear when a perpetrator is eating  face  or whipping out a gun at them if that face is white.

The part of this story that simply blows my mind, other than the fact that he was not shot nine times as soon as the officers arrived on the scene, is the fact they went through five options! When they yelled for him to get his hands up and stop eating the victims face and he didn’t oblige they crossed that off the list and tried something else. Seriously, WTF?

Did Tamir Rice get a warning? He didn’t even have dead birds around him but he was black with a gun, real or not. No options

When there are brown people involved the strategy is usually the same shoot first assess later.

On Anger: We Have a Right

“I’m tired of praying. We’ve been praying and we still get gunned down”

“These people will cry about a lion getting killed but won’t blink when a boy is gunned down in a park”

“Tell me what have we ever done to them?”

“Can we live?

“Do you read the comments? They hate us. They really hate us.”

joe walsh_o9zcow
And this is from a man who was an elected official. Real America…

I do read the comments and the commentaries from the likes of filth like Joe Walsh and Fox News. I read them when I know I shouldn’t, when I know that my heart will grow angry and my head will cloud with hate. I keep telling myself I am better than them. I am. We are.

And yet we have a right to be angry. When a lion gets more sympathy than Tamir Rice we should be angry. We are not hateful. We are not burning people’s homes down or terrorizing their children and yet they keep telling us we deserve their hate because we want equality.

We shouldn’t have to keep explaining to people what inequality means when there is clear evidence all over the internet of the two Americas.  We shouldn’t have to explain that racism is real when Joe Walsh, an ex-congressman, can spew hate and call out the real Americans to destroy us. Note that he was on CNN the very same night spewing his hate after he basically threatened the President of the United States. Funny how Ted Nugent and he get away with that all the time.

Terrorist aren’t born they are made.

Terrorist aren’t born they are made.

Let America be America Again
Who said the free? Not me?
Surely not me? The millions on relief today?
The millions shot down when we strike?
The millions who have nothing for our pay?
For all the dreams we’ve dreamed
And all the songs we’ve sung
And all the hopes we’ve held
And all the flags we’ve hung,
The millions who have nothing for our pay–
Except the dream that’s almost dead today.O, let America be America again–
The land that never has been yet–
And yet must be–the land where every man is free.
The land that’s mine–the poor man’s, Indian’s, Negro’s, ME–
Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose–
The steel of freedom does not stain.
From those who live like leeches on the people’s lives,
We must take back our land again,
America!

O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath–
America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain–
All, all the stretch of these great green states–
And make America again!

On Black Money: Invest In Us

It’s the only thing America understands.

We’ve asked, we begged, we marched, we assimilated, we fought wars, we went to colleges, we invested in this country…but we didn’t invest in ourselves. We haven’t collectively built wealth in our communities and now its time to disinvest because it is the only thing America understands…

It is time for us to disinvest.

It is time to support our banks. Support our businesses. Support our communities.

We have consistently come together to support each other during these times of slaughter…yes, I said slaughter.  We cry together and we march together but we have not collectively taken our money out of this system that is corrupted against us.

Marching is part of the equation, a small part. Taking back our money and investing it in our businesses, our schools, and our communities is the bigger part of the equation. This message has been on repeat since Malcolm. To get America’s attention and demand change in this system set up to destroy us at will we have to exercise our economic power…and that is one thing we do have even if we don’t recognize it.

We spend billions of dollars in other businesses set up in our communities. We spend billions of dollars on clothes, jewelry and cars..it was only just two weekends ago Jesse Williams burned down the LA Coliseum with that message.

We can’t deny our own resilience, our strength, and our humanity. We are not weak or lazy, dumb or malicious. We can’t allow others to shape or change any of  that which makes us great but first we have to see it in ourselves. Second we have to STOP TRYING TO APPEASE OUR OPPRESSORS. We don’t need anyone to love us…we need to love ourselves, we need to fight for ourselves and we need to support one another.

We are on our way. Our voices are just as loud as they were in the 60’s. Our resolve grows stronger everyday. We are not letting the narrative be changed. We are not forgiving and praying for others strength…we are showing our strength.

I believe in the brotherhood of man, all men, but I don’t believe in brotherhood with anybody who doesn’t want brotherhood with me. I believe in treating people right, but I’m not going to waste my time trying to treat somebody right who doesn’t know how to return the treatment.
Malcolm X

Fuck the bullshit we are tired.

STOP KILLING US

I just don’t know what else to say. Even the governor of MN says if the driver had been white he would still be alive. I’m so tired yet I’m so angry. My tears flowed hard and heavy when I saw the 15yo son of Alton Sterling break down on television. My heart broke when I listened to Philando Castile’s 4yo daughter comfort her mama after watching her daddy gunned down FOR NO DAMN REASON!

Stop telling us these punk ass cops feared for their lives when a black man is running away from them with hands up while a white man can POINT a gun at a cop and still live!

Stop telling us All Lives Matter when it is clear that the lives of black people matter less than a lion or a gorilla in your mind.

Stop telling us we are racist because we ask for the same damn privileges of freedom you enjoy all your damn life.

Stop telling us Black Lives Matter is a fucking hate group when it has never threatened people nor did the Black Panthers but yet the KKK has slaughtered black people since its existence and they still exist and our presidential nominee gives them a pass.

Choke on your Independence Day. We want Freedom too

flag of black people

Take off the uniform and put on your KKK hoodie  leave it to a sister to be one of the first to speak up.

On Television: Underground

mv5bmje0nzk4mji3n15bml5banbnxkftztgwntgxnziznze-_v1_ux477_cr00477268_al_

A few months ago I had no idea I had WGN but when I heard they were making Underground I made it my business to make sure it was one of my subscription channels. Unfortunately I’ve been missing out because I caught the first season of Salem on Netflix a year ago and completely missed season two on WGN.

Underground premiered Wednesday night at 10pm and I started to just watch it on Demand the next day but I am so glad I fought off the old lady needs to go to bed mind frame and watched.

I know there are a lot of black Americans who are tired of seeing us portrayed as slaves on the screen, however it is a great part of our history and I think this generation needs to be very aware of it. I have never looked as our enslavement as a weakness but one of great resilience.  Our history books may make it sound like we were slaves, didn’t resist, and then Lincoln freed us but we were actually fighters, we resisted, and many of us freed ourselves. Underground has a variety of characters and the strength I saw in just the first episode made me proud. Our history is not one of inhumanity and we did not accept it from slaveowners.

Jurnee Smollett-Bell always brings power to her characters, from way back when she was a little girl in Eve’s Bayou and she did not disappoint. She leads a great cast of characters. The series is only ten episodes and honestly emotionally I don’t think I could handle a full season of episodes…the first one had me in tears. I felt some of that pain in my soul as I’m sure a lot of people did.

The last few years we as African-Americans have had a great variety of representation on television and from Blackish to How To Get Away With Murder and Underground is definitely a powerful addition.

On Sheriff Lott: Where Are the Tears

It is now being reported that the fifteen year old girl thrown to the floor like trash recently lost her mother and grandmother. She is in foster care. I dare anyone to refute that if she were a white girl and the officer attacked her AND it was found out she is a recent orphan the streets would be flooded with tears!

Where is the concern and outcry for her mental health? Sheriff Lott personally saw to it that her pain was not an issue this afternoon. He made very clear her feelings, her traumas, her anxiety was not an issue but all this shit is her fault. He repeated it more than once.

Cue the police union in 5,4,3,2,1… to demand the officer be reinstated because how dare he be fired over this trouble starter.
